Origins of the Ōtōkan Rinzai Lineage in Japan

The Linchi (Rinzai) school of Chinese Ch'an (Zen) and more particularly The Yogi Branch of the Rinzai School developed into the predominant Zen lineage in Japan. Although there were many contacts with the Chinese Linchi School, the lineage originating with Shomyo (the Ō-tō-kan-Order), which centuries later was "reformed/rejuvenated" by Master Hakuin (1686-1769), represents the most vital Zen School in Japan today.

Before going to China Master Shomyo also studied under the Chinese Rinzai Yogi Master Lan-chi Tao-lung (1203-1268) who came to Japan in 1246.
